EVA has been helping convert boats to electric as well as electric sailboat auxiliaries for almost 20 years. Our largest electric auxiliary is a 144V system for a 50 ft sailboat built in Nova Scotia. Our largest pure electric boat was a 40 ft Electric Boat by Clearwater Boats built in 1994.
EVA has done a number of smaller auxiliary drives and electric boat packages. The typical system is 48V. There are two reasons. First, a 48V system can drive a 28 ft sailboat with 8000 lbs displacement. A 48V system is rated at 6 hp continuous and 10 hp peak. This accommodates most sailboats. Second, above 50V, the U.S. Coast Guard has more stringent regulations; these regulations are more applicable to commercial vessels.
EVA can provide boat calculations to help you size components. There is a misconception that:
1 hp electric = 3 hp gas.
This is not true.
Hp is hp. The difference is that an electric motor is rated at it point of maximum efficiency; yet may be capable of delivering 3x its rating for short periods of time (i.e. Startup, acceleration, etc.)
